Jayavarman V built the Royal Enclosure, which has walls on three sides, and the Terrace of the Elephants on the east side. This area was where Jayavarman's palace and principal temple stood. In addition to these two structures, there were many other buildings made of wood. Sandstone pools used by the king for bathing still exist near the north wall.
The Phimeanakas Temple was built by Rajendravarman I and was the principal temple in his city. In Sanskrit the word means `celestial palace,' hence the confusion of the Chinese historian, Chou Ta-Kuan, who believed that the Phimeanakas itself was the king's palace and not his temple. It is a sandstone pyramid temple, now in a bad state of ruin, representing Mount Meru.
